Have you bought scented sachets and placed them in your wardrobe? I have and I love them. They make my clothes smell really good. But I could only get the sachets made by my favorite brand in another city far away from home. And unfortunately, that particular brand doesn’t sell online. So I thought, why not make my own sachets instead? I could use herbs that are growing in my backyard. And I won’t be using any synthetic fragrances which many brands use in making those sachets.
I found that I don’t even have to dry the herbs to make the sachets. Herbs like rosemary can be used without drying them. You can use freshly picked rosemary leaves which is when it exudes a strong scent! As it dries, the smell becomes milder.
What is Rosemary?
Rosemary is an evergreen shrub whose leaves are very aromatic. This plant is native to the Mediterranean region and Asia. In warmer climates, it is grown as an ornamental plant because it produces flowers throughout the year and is drought resistant. The flowers are mauve in colour and very pretty.
It gets its name from its Latin name ‘rosmarinus‘ which means ‘dew of the sea’ since it grows very well near the sea. What a poetic name for this wonderfully scented plant!
What is it used for?
It is widely cultivated around the world for its scent and taste. The aromatic leaves are used as seasoning in Mediterranean cuisine. Oil is extracted from its leaves and used to make perfumes.
Rosemary is also considered to be an insect repellent and keeps the moths away. So if you make scented sachets with it, you can also use it as a substitute for mothballs. Two-in-one benefit! Who wouldn’t want that, right?
Last week, I made some fresh rosemary-scented sachets and I loved it! It’s super easy to do.
What you need:
- Rosemary
- Shears or scissors
- Bowl
- Cloth pouch
- Spoon
Gather fresh rosemary
Gather fresh rosemary from the plant or buy freshly cut rosemary from the store. Don’t buy the dried rosemary leaves. I cut a few fresh rosemary sprigs from the plant growing in my backyard. It’s quite a well-established plant that flowers almost the entire year except during winter. Snip off the soft upper branches of the rosemary plant. You can use shears to cut it. I used sharp scissors since it was very easy to cut.
Pluck the leaves
Pluck the needle-like rosemary leaves off the branches and place them in a bowl. You will get a whiff of its wonderful smell.
Cloth bag
Take a small bag made of cotton or a mesh bag. Don’t use bags made of heavy fabric because it won’t let the aroma waft out. Cotton or any other breathable fabric is ideal. I had cotton drawstring bags lying around my house so I used that.
Scoop it in
Scoop the leaves into the bag using a spoon. Fill it up and tighten it with a string. Now it’s ready to use! That’s it. So easy isn’t it?
Make your clothes smell fresh
Place the bag underneath your clothes in your wardrobe or drawers. You can also tie it to hangers if there are no shelves in your wardrobe. It makes your clothes smell fresh and clean. Your whole wardrobe will end up smelling amazing too!
Every time I open my wardrobe, I take a deep breath of the wonderful aroma. Try making these rosemary-scented sachets the next time you run out of them and let me know. I would love to hear how it turned out!
